Golf Without Frills’ ambition is to put golf in the heart of Moroccan kids in a unique way and those same kids in the heart of Moroccan golf!

For some lucky people, golf is either a profession or a career. At Golf Without Frills it’s a way of life.

Our family charity is registered in Scotland (SC041736) but operational in Marrakesh, Morocco, and is based on the fundamental principle that all children must have the opportunity for a successful start in life and sport regardless of age, race, gender, family composition, income or community.

Golf Without Frills has three guiding ambitions:

  • That every child in Marrakesh will have the opportunity to experience golf
  • Every child who chooses golf will be welcomed into a sport that they can play for life
  • Every child who steps up to the first tee will be encouraged to reach their full potential.

In response to this significant disparity in Marrakesh, GWF was created in August 2009 to provide a free golf program necessary for the local children robbed of an occasion for physical activity, coaching, being part of a team, learning life skills and a distraction from “negative recreation” and hopefully reducing a very high school dropout rate and feelings of depression and anxiety.

Support for Nepalese golf enters third year

NepalThe R&A’s support for golf in Nepal is about to enter its third year with £16,000-worth of coaching grants and equipment having been awarded to the Himalayan nation
since 2008. There are now six golf courses and two public access driving ranges in Nepal, which are used by over 1,000 golfers, including 200 juniors. And in recognition of its growth in popularity and participation, golf has now been included in the Nepal National Games; a significant achievement for a sport which, until recently, was unknown to much of the population.

The R&A’s Director – Asia-Pacific, Dominic Wall, along with Kwang-soo Hur and David Cherry, President and Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, recently visited Nepal to see, first hand, the considerable progress that has been made by the Nepal Golf Association. During the trip, which was covered by television and national press, the delegation took in four of Nepal’s six courses: the Royal Nepal Golf Club; the Himalayan Golf Club; Army Golf Course; and Gokarna Golf Club, the
latter of a standard to host international championships.

“When you think of Nepal, golf is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. The Nepal Golf Association is trying to address this point and is looking to improve the sport at various levels,” explained Wall. They have established a very active junior development programme that is attracting children to the game. To complement that programme, they are developing a national practice and training facility in Kathmandu, due to open in 2010, which will provide a focal point for the development of talented young golfers.”

“The NGA is also working with the county’s leading travel company and the Nepalese government to develop a comprehensive golf tourism strategy.”
Such is the growing recognition of Nepal as a golfing destination that the 600-yard par-5 fifth hole at the Himalayan Golf Club, a spectacular nine-hole course surrounded by snow-capped peaks, has been included in a list of the world’s top 100 golf holes by a leading US publication. And due to its increasing international profile, the Nepalese government’s 2011 ‘Visit Nepal Year’ strategy will contain a significant golf element, with ministers pledging ongoing support for the sport.
